Create Custom Phone Agents

Pod makes it easy to build your own AI phone agent in just a few minutes. Whether you need an agent for sales, support, scheduling, or lead follow-up, you can customize everything β€” from the voice to the knowledge base and call actions.

Steps to Create a Custom Phone Agent

1. Log in and start a new agent

Go to https://www.callpod.ai/dashboard/agents. Click New Agent, then give your agent a name and short description. This helps you organize multiple agents later.

2. Understand inbound vs outbound

  • Inbound Agent β†’ answers calls from customers
  • Outbound Agent β†’ automatically calls leads or contacts

Both guides include quickstart prompts you can copy and adapt, so you don’t need to write one from scratch.

3. Upload a knowledge base

To make your agent truly useful, give it access to your company information. You can:

  • Upload documents (PDF, DOCX, TXT)
  • Paste in FAQs
  • Connect your public website so Pod can pull in data

This ensures the agent can answer detailed product or support questions. πŸ‘‰ Guide: Knowledge Base Setup

4. Connect a phone number

Your agent needs a phone number to make or receive calls. In the Numbers tab, choose a provider:

  • Twilio or Telnyx are supported out of the box
  • Once connected, assign the number to your agent

5. Set the agent’s voice

Go to the Voice tab and pick from a range of voices. You can:

  • Choose male or female
  • Pick formal, casual, or regional accents
  • Match the voice style to your brand

6. Add actions (optional)

Agents can do more than just talk. With Actions, you can:

  • Book meetings on your calendar
  • Log notes in your CRM
  • Send SMS or email follow-ups
  • Update records in external systems

7. Test your agent

Once configured, open the Playground and run a test call.

  • Simulate common customer questions
  • Check that your knowledge base responses are accurate
  • Adjust actions, or voice settings as needed

Testing helps ensure your agent sounds natural and performs correctly before going live.

Example Use Cases

  • Sales: Instantly follow up with inbound leads
  • Support: Answer FAQs and route callers to the right department
  • Scheduling: Book appointments directly into your calendar
  • E-commerce: Handle returns, shipping questions, and order status
